Swimming with Sea Turtles

If you didn't know about Prince Kuhio Beach Park, or its neighbor, Lawai Beach, you might drive right by them. But don't let appearances fool you. Rocky, postage-stamp-sized Prince Kuhio Beach is the place for snorkeling encounters of the green-shelled kind—that is, with the group of green sea turtles that regularly graze and snooze amid the seaweed-draped rock ledges here.

In Hawaiian mythology, these graceful, speckled creatures, called honu, acted as aumakua, or godlike guardians. Today, the law requires that you keep a respectful distance from this protected species; however, if you are swimming near them, one or two gentle giants may paddle a little closer to check you out. Because ocean currents here can be tricky, go with a knowledgeable guide, like those from Aloha Kauai Tours. The company's snorkeling trip also stops at adjacent Lawai Beach, an unassuming strip of sand where the waters teem with up to 140 sea-life species, including prison-striped Moorish Idols, unicorn fish and octopi (alohakauaitours.com). Finding Nemo should be a cinch!

 Hi Terri, just wanted to say I had a fantastic snorkeling trip with Paul a couple of weeks ago. He did a great job with our little group, particularly as we were all very inexperienced, and enabled me to see particularly the turtle. Following this I went out again myself a couple more time when we went to the Big Island.

 Can you please pass on my thanks again to him?

If one wants to get up close and personal with the rainforest then this is the shore excursion for you...The ride us bumpy-as advertised. Our guide, Jack, was very informative and quite knowledgeable of the area and its local history. Overall, this was a very enjoyable tour. One made better with the great knowledge shared by our tour guide, Jack.

Having never snorkeled before in the ocean, our guides Paul and Kailee did an excellent job explaining how to use the equipment, covered in detail where we were going, what to do and see, and made the experience FUN and educational. Our family of 5 adults took the 1/2 day Backroads tour. Our guide was Paul Miranda and he was terrific. He has a great sense of humor, and is very knowledgeable about local history, plants and animals. The ride is a little bumpy - but totally worth it! The views are spectacular from the top of the crater, and the drive through the tunnel was very exciting. Snacks were provided, including water and fresh fruit, at a beautiful beach setting. All in all, a great way to spend the morning, you will see parts of Kauai you won't see in your rental car!

Thank you to the trio that led the SeaFun Beach Snorkel on 2/26/09. They were extremely helpful. Kailee was especially good with assistance into the water, while in the water, and then exiting the water and beach. My husband, Gerald, has loved to snorkel but, due to the removal of a brain tumor, he lost physical and personality traits that he has enjoyed all his life. He was adamant about wanting to snorkel again and Kailee made that possible while watching after two small girls and our friends who were novice at snorkeling. It was a great morning.
