Terri, a graphic artist from the Los Angeles area, moved to Kauai in 1987. In 1989, Terri took a class from Susan Olsen in the little understood process of Chinese paper making. Immediately the impressionistic influences of a six month respite in France began to show in her work. Through experimentation the medium became a whole new form of expression. Terri's art has won several awards and has been acquired by collectors worldwide. | |

Only by understanding the process can the casual observer appreciate the intricacy of Terri's work. The process begins with the harvesting of plant fibers. Paper mulberry, hau, banana each have their own characteristics. The fibers are boiled in lye to break them down. Some are left course, others are macerated in a blender. The fibers are then dyed and stored suspended in mucilage. The preparation of the raw material is complete. | |

The palate is a screen. Working in reverse, Terri places the bolder lines of the foreground first. Using a variety of tools including a sharp stick and an eyedropper, Terri draws from the variety of colors and textures of fiber to fill in the background. When the work has dried, it is peeled off the screen revealing the finished piece. | |

Terri's work is inspired by the natural beauty of Kauai. From pastoral scenes to marine life, the art portrays Kauai. Through the miracle of modern technology, laser prints of Terri's work are now available at affordable prices. Amazingly, the intricacy of the paper shows in the prints.
